Hairy Woodpecker Picoides villosus
The Hairy is almost a larger version of the Downy with a longer bill. The small red patch on the back of his head identifies this Hairy as a male.

During the summer months, the Hairy woodpecker feasts on insects as he probes the bark of the old apple trees and in winter his sharp “peek” call announces his arrival on our suet filled stick feeder.
